Embracing the Supernatural - The First Sign

1 The third day, there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there. 2 Jesus also was invited, with his disciples, to the marriage. 3 When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no wine.”

4 Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with you and me? My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever he says to you, do it.” 6 Now there were six water pots of stone set there after the Jews’ way of purifying, containing two or three metretes apiece. 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the water pots with water.” They filled them up to the brim. 8 He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the ruler of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the ruler of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and didn’t know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the ruler of the feast called the bridegroom, 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when the guests have drunk freely, then that which is worse. You have kept the good wine until now!” 11 This beginning of his signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. (from John 2:1-11)

In the movie ‘Sign’, you could see the crop circles that have beautiful patterns. Mel Gibson sees the signs and the camera moves away, showing the beautiful patterns. The pattern might deliver some message from another planet. If you step away from a garden, you could see the similar art of God. John the writer put the sign at a time and shows the beauty that is in that sign. Among the seven signs, one of the sign is changing of water into wine. Now, let’s see the sign.

The 1st thing: Changing of water into wine. In 삼겹살 party when soju ran out, you might go out to get some soju in the convenience store. Imagine that someone change water into soju. That happened in the time of Jesus. Jesus changed water in the 180-gallon jar into wine. The jar represents the Jewish ritual. They cleanse themselves with the water in the jar. The water changes into wine, meaning Jesus’ blood. The purification jar.

After all that beating and torture, one gave Jesus some vinegar wine. Vinegar wine is bitter. It’s cheap stuff to endure the pain. But Jesus refused the wine and felt the pain as bitter as it was. He gave us his best, we gave him the worst.

The Sing shows us that He is the Christ. Who is Jesus Christ? John tried to show us who Jesus Christ is to make us believe in that Jesus is the Christ with the seven signs.

Jesus is the Lord of nature. If you put a cup of water in the table and try to turn into wine, it is impossible. That was what alchemist tried to do. But he changed it into wine instantaneously. Everything is made by Jesus. (John 1:1-3)

Jesus is the Lord of human nature. He can change you and me. He drove out a demon in a person and changed his nature. When he changes a person, he changes his/her moral nature, immorality into morality. He is still doing today. All things are possible for him. Jesus came to transform our wasted life into meaningful. Jesus made a fragile person into the rock-like. It is Peter. He changed demon-posessed woman into Mary, Saul into st. Paul in Tarsus. He transforms our life.

Then do we have nothing to do? No. He works through human’s hands. He needed cooperation with human. The servants served Jesus’ order without negative attitude. We need to be obedient and positive. He transformed a paralyzed man through his obedience. God provides us the soil, sun, and water. Jesus still uses human’s cooperation to make miracle.

Mary the mother of Jesus, “Do whatever he tells you.” She ordered complete surrender to Jesus. Her words still tell us “Do whatever he tells you.” without our human nature and our moral nature.
